Transport for NSW, RISI courses are conducted every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday

Some courses can be conducted for companies on Fridays, but only on request by companies with ( 5 persons or more) starting at 07:30 am, in our air-conditioned premises at Level 1, Unit 7/ 4 Brunker Road Chullora 2190. Plenty of parking available.

Southern Cross Rail Training in the Newcastle Area: also conducts monthly courses at our Cardiff Training facility located at 45 Macquarie Road Cardiff NSW 2285.

Rail Safety Worker Induction (R.I.S.I.) certificate is a mandatory requirement for all contractors working within Transport for NSW rail corridors. This one day course provides awareness of legal obligations, critical safety requirements and hazards that workers must be able to identify and deal with when conducting contracted work..

Discussion through this course includes descriptions of interlocking equipment and basic signaling indications, rules for people working in the danger zone, or on platforms, worksite protection arrangements, common track-side signage, basic handsignals, peculiarities of train movements and critical personal responsibility. Attitudes and practices necessary for employees to work safely within the varying nature of the railway environment are discussed..

A workbook is provided for each participant to enhance discussion of some of these critical issues

Assessment Procedure: At the completion of the course a theory assessment is conducted. This is followed by a practical assessment.Both must be passed to be competent. Persons who are not yet competent, will be reviewed and depending on this outcome, may be advised to return on another course date resit the course and be given a supplementy assessment. If the supplementry assessment is conducted the normal course fee will be reduced to $100.00.

ID Requirements: Rail Industry Safety Induction – course requirement 100 points of ID

At the successful completion of this course:

Participants will be issued with a Statement of Attainment course code TLIF2080C "Safely access the Rail Corridor" This must not be used to conduct any work for 'Transport for NSW' until a Rail Safety Worker card has been issued. It is advised cards are only issued by 'TfNSW' and will take from 10 to 15 days to be processed.


Please Note: Clients who require reprints of 'Statements of Attainment' after the course has been completed and originals have been issued, will be charged an admin fee of $20.00 per statement, to provide this service.


Medical Examination

The awarding of the 'TfNSW' Rail Safety Worker (RISI) Card is dependent on people passing a (category 3) medical examination by an Authorised Transport for NSW, Medical Practitioner.See List of Authorised Health Service Providers

( See also list under FORMS). Which must show workers to be drug & alcohol free, in generally good physical condition with hearing and visual acuity to satisfy the requirements of the Category 3.It is recommended that this be completed before training.

Anyone who has undertaken RISI before 1st April 2011 and have been issued a Non- TfNSW card will have to be retrained and attend a new course.

The RISI course need only be completed once, however renewal of the certificate is required at intervals based on medical examinations which are required every five years unless a particular health condition requires earlier re-examination. A nominal fee is charged for the renewal of certificates which will need to have a new photograph taken every five years.Medicals including drug & alcohol test must be submitted with new ID forms.

Literacy and Numeracy

Participants must be sufficiently competent in English to do this course. If they have reading, writing and numeracy skills to the standard of level 3, which means that if you, are reading this web page and you can make sense of it and explain the meaning to others without assistance. Application Forms have to be completed in written English as well as written assessments. Trainers can only assist with written assessments, in special cases, after verbal questioning of a person with limited English skills.

Requirements for Literacy and Numeracy

Participants must be able to understand, read and speak basic English as a minimum entry requirement. The course is presented in English and participants must be able to demonstrate that they can interpret and apply the learning. Language, Literacy and Numeracy
(LLN) issues are considered during course development. The design of the assessment tools reflects the LLN competence required in the workplace. Interpreters cannot be utilised and materials cannot be translated into other languages”.

An English Assessment may be conducted prior to training if the client wishes, please call to discuss arrangements.

Please be advised, that if a person attends the RISI course and assessment and the outcome is "Not Yet Competent" they may have the opportunity to attend a new course. They will have to pay an additional fee of $100.00 to attend a new course and be assessed again.

Age Requirement

There is no age requirement for RISI only that for applicants who are 16 years or under, additional information must be provided to Transport for NSW (regarding type of work to be done and level of supervision) and it will then be reviewed on a case by case basis.

This does not apply to persons 17years and over.


Visa Information Requirement

This is not required if you are an Australian Citizen (Born in Australia or have taken Australian Citizenship)

Anyone not an Australian Citizen must provide their Passport on the day of training in order to check Visa status

Medical Cat 3 cost $200.00 and can be done on same day
