Conducted over fifteen days the trainer providing this off the job course presents and discusses the NSW rail network Safeworking Rules and Procedures and their application.

The course is designed to meet the needs of train crews, and Traffic Officers and is also suitable for any rail industry worker who wishes to get a deeper understanding of rail operations and methods of train control.

Subject matter in the off the job modules includes all of the network rules and procedures specified in the RailSafe Training Standards applicable to:

General safeworking; Train Working; Work on Track (worksite protection arrangements); Signals and Signs; Handsignals; Use of detonators; Shunting ; Safeworking Forms; Train Operating Conditions Manual; Automatic Air Brake Systems; and Brake Tests, and includes Safeworking Systems Modules covering:

The Train Order System
Rail Vehicle Detection Systems
Electric Staff and Ticket Systems
Staff and Ticket System
The Block telegraph System, and
Special Working

When this course is conducted together with practical on the job training provided by agreement with an employer, a Certificate III 30402 (Rail operations) based on the Transport & Distribution TDT02 Training Australia Training Package may be awarded.

The off the job modules are conducted in our air conditioned premises at Chullora or at other locations by agreement with clients where required, while the on the job practical modules are typically delivered in an experiential training situation by the company’s own trainers as the learner undertakes work activities under instruction. Southern Cross Rail Training maintains a mentoring role to validate the integrity of the training experience and ensure the training programme delivers all of the appropriate TDT02 Units of Competence.
