Track Machine Operator
Track machines (Hi-rails) Operate in worksites protected by a Local Possession Authority or Track Occupancy Authority within the rail networks. These machines must be registered to travel on the public road system and are fitted with flanged auxiliary wheels that steer the vehicle as it travels along the track. Track machines authorised to travel in the rail network are listed in the NSW Train Operating Conditions Manual.
Types of vehicles that run on road or rail include 4WD station sedans, utilities, crew-cab trucks, tipper-trucks, concrete mixers and excavators.
Discussion during this course includes network rules and procedures appropriate to track machines operating in the network, explanations of equipment that must be fitted to Hi-rail units and when and where to use this equipment. Where they can enter and leave the network, protection arrangements to implement in emergencies, communication protocols, responsibilities of Protection Officers and Traffic Officers and pilots during movements, worksite protection arrangements, permissible speeds when traveling and handsignals.
Operators must pass a practical on-track assessment during the session in a safe rail siding to demonstrate the ability to operate the vehicle safely; get the vehicle safely on and off the tracks and operate according to key rules and procedures.
Pre-requisites include holding a current Rail Industry Safety Induction Certificate and a current Driver/Operators license for the type of track machine that will be operated on the tracks. The certificate must be renewed every two years.
