Track Vehicle Operator

Track vehicles Operate in the rail network in protected worksites and they can travel under protection or as a train. These machines may be articulated rail bound machinery such as rail grinding or tamping machines or road rail vehicles. All track vehicles and track machines must be listed in the NSW TOC Manual.

Track Vehicle Operators are trained to recognize and respond to trackside signs and signals and are certified to operate the leading vehicle in a convoy or when traveling as a train.

Southern Cross Rail Training conducts this off the job course in theoretical modules in our air-conditioned premises at Level 1, Unit 7/ 4 Brunker Road Chullora 2190 or on-site by request if required

Applicants must complete further training on the job under the supervision of an experienced machine operator, until they are competent to operate the machine independently. When considered competent the applicant is required to complete an on-track practical assessment conducted by a workplace assessor.

Discussion during off the job modules includes network rules and procedures appropriate to track vehicles operating in the network as specified in the RailSafe Training Standards, explanations of equipment that must be fitted to the vehicles and when and where to use this equipment, worksite protection arrangements, protection arrangements to implement in emergencies, communication protocols, responsibilities of Protection Officers and Traffic Officers and pilots during movements, permissible speeds when traveling and recognizing, handsignals and interpreting trackside signs and signals.

Course duration
The course is conducted over two days.

Recognition is given for applicants holding a current Track Machine Operator Certificate and the course is modified accordingly which usually means that Recognising and Responding to Trackside Signs and Signals modules only are required which can be completed in one day.
