Wagon Maintenance and Train Inspections

This course is available to employees of Rail Operators involved in the inspection and maintenance of rail freight Wagons, or passenger cars. The course can be conducted to include all of the wagon maintenance and inspection modules or divided as required to include the wagon maintenance or train inspection modules separately.

It is preferable for this course to be conducted on-site at the client’s premises where vehicles are normally inspected and equipment normally used are readily available, however, the course may be conducted in our air-conditioned premises at Chullora with practical simulated exercises in safe rail sidings nearby, by agreement with relevant rail operators.

The modules can be delivered in a single block, broken into Wagon maintenance and Train inspection blocks or conducted one or two days per week with the trainees applying their learned knowledge and skills in between sessions.

Following the off the job modules, Trainees must complete further training on the job under the supervision of experienced Wagon Maintainers to complete all aspects of the course. Each applicant will have an on the job Log Book to record their work experience and indicate when competence is achieved in nominated work tasks and relevant Units of Competencies from the nationally endorsed TDT02 Transport and Distribution Training Package.

When the Trainee’s employer considers them to have reached a satisfactory level of competence in all respects, the completed Log Book and work performance will be assessed and competence validated by a Certificate IV Workplace Assessor/Trainer from Southern Cross Rail Training and a Statement of Attainment issued. This validation process may include the completion of a written assessment to test the trainee’s knowledge.
